When the wheels fall off your day by 7:30am

gratitude even when the wheels fall off

This used to happen to me all the time. I’d be rushing around day after day and before long, the wheels would fall off the whole thing before I’d even left the house. I know you know what I’m talking about!

Have you ever had “wheels off” kind of day? It looks like this:

  1. alarm fails to go off properly – wake up 45 minutes late
  2. skip morning workout and shower
  3. try to look presentable without a shower
  4. grab a coffee on the way out the door
  5. spill coffee on your outfit trying to get in the car
  6. go back inside, change clothes
  7. leave without coffee (or breakfast, for that matter)
  8. get to work late disheveled and hungry, naturally, you hit rush hour traffic
  9. grab terrible office coffee
  10. skip lunch to make up for being late
  11. mid-afternoon grab a candy bar from the vending machine and another bad cup of coffee
  12. sludge through the afternoon, grumpy and on an artificial caffeine/sugar high
  13. bottom out on sugar crash
  14. get home, order pizza
  15. veg in front of the tv for 4 hours
  16. go to bed late and exhausted

Yep. Me too. It feels terrible and if you don’t rescue it somewhere along the way? The same scenario (or something similar) unfolds again the next day.

I used to honestly believe that if the wheels fell off on Monday, then the rest of the week was doomed!

But it’s not!

After PLENTY of my own experience trying to salvage yet another day waking up too late and getting to work late, I began to realize some things. There are some little changes I can make along the way (even on the REALLY bad days) that can consequently turn the whole day around.

Want to know a couple of my secrets?

  1. Purchase a great hair clip that makes it look like you MEANT to wear your hair tied back!
  2. Yes, I’m serious about #1.
  3. Play music that helps reset your mood, or listen to your favorite book or podcast as you drive.
  4. Before you get out of the car, take 3 deep, even breaths.
  5. I mean it! Take 3 deep breaths – it’s amazing how much it can calm you down, and only takes about 30 seconds.
  6. Take the lunch break. You need it. And everyone around you needs you to take it too!
  7. Pull your favorite essential oil or healing crystal out of your desk. Something as simple as a beautiful stone or a soothing aroma is better at getting you through the afternoon than caffeine and sugar.
  8. If cooking isn’t going to happen, at least drop by the grocery and choose something with nutritional value on your way home. Lots of stores have decent hot meals that can be consumed immediately.
  9. Sure, watch some tv if you want. But not 4 hours please! Take a nice evening walk or bath, read a book, have some herbal tea and GO TO BED on time!

Are you ready for the biggest one? This is THE single best way I know to take a wheels-off day and turn it into a dream day! It will literally REVOLUTIONIZE your life.

Drum roll, please….

Yes, I’m serious about this one too – even more than that hair tie!

If you are serious about recovering after the wheels fall off your day and your entire lifestyle – it’s ALL about gratitude.

  1. Gratitude for waking up in the morning
  2. Gratitude for even have a shower available (even if there’s not time to use it)
  3. Gratitude for hair clips
  4. Gratitude for transportation to work
  5. Gratitude for coffee, even bad coffee
  6. Gratitude for vending machines
  7. Gratitude for making it home safely
  8. Gratitude for the pizza delivery guy (be sure to express that to him with a nice tip, after all, he’s the reason you don’t have to cook tonight!)
  9. Gratitude for television
  10. Gratitude for a bed to sleep in

Do you see how even the yucky day can be SO MUCH BETTER when you add in the gratitude? My experience is, when I start purposefully adding in gratitude even when the day starts off awful, it’s not two hours until the whole thing has turned around!

Most of all, when I go to sleep with gratitude on my mind, I’m much more likely to wake up well and ready for my day! Why? Because, it’s a choice. When I choose gratitude at night, I am choosing to end my day the way I want tomorrow to go. Therefore, choose gratitude!

So what do you say? Will you choose gratitude today?

I LOVE to hear from you! Comment below and let me know what YOU are grateful for!

How to enjoy the holidays

I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced it, but sometimes it can be a challenge to enjoy the holidays. Maybe it’s been a tough year, or there’s a conflict with someone in your family, or you’re working a second job to make ends meet, or whatever. And once it gets going down that road, what to do then?

Choose. Choose to enjoy the holidays.

Yep. Make a conscious choice to enjoy the holidays anyway.

Here’s the thing – our life situation is really only responsible for about 10% of our happiness. The other 90% of happiness is attributed to, you guessed it – choice. How we perceive our life, and choose to view it and respond to it is THE number one factor in us experiencing JOY.

For example…

You’ve seen it – the person with no money and a terrible life circumstance that somehow rises above it all to show kindness to others, or the homeless person who volunteers to help out the “less fortunate.” All you have to do is take a 5 minute tour through FaceBook to see one of those heart-warming stories that makes you cry over the goodness of humanity and the ability to overcome.

Now, I’m not saying this is easy. Not by any means. I’m sure the people in those stories didn’t FEEL like life was full of sunshine and roses as they walked through their days under such hardship. I would imagine that it seemed like an unbearable load most days.

Each of the people in those inspiring videos did the same thing. They CHOSE to see things differently. They CHOSE to rise above the hardship and spread love and light ANYWAY.

Know what the best part is?

Those people in the tear-jerker videos don’t have any special super-power. They are just regular people who decided to enjoy life no matter what.

And you can too!

If choosing to enjoy the holidays as a whole is too daunting, try enjoying today. If there is a particularly challenging event or get-together coming up, decide now to see the joy that IS there. Because there is always something to enjoy and be grateful for. And I can guarantee if you truly change your perspective about that thing you are dreading or hate, the entire scenery of this season will change. The lights will twinkle brighter, the songs will sound sweeter, and YOU will be filled with joy, because you chose to be.

So, tell me – how will you choose to enjoy the holidays this year? Let me know in the comments below!

Do you ever need to know you’re not alone?

I do.

In fact, that’s why Iridescent Dragonflies is even a thing.

Let me take you back a couple years…

It was the Spring of 2014 and I had been working at a job I loved as a nonprofit consultant for a little over 5 years. The company I worked for helped small nonprofits build a strong internal structure, raise money and develop better communications with their supporters. It was one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever had.

But by the Spring of 2014 I was getting restless.

It wasn’t that I was bored with my job. Nope. Still loved it immensely. However, I felt a stirring deep inside. A stirring that compelled me to do something more personal.

And it all came from my own inner journey.

You see, I was hungry. For knowledge, for growth, for a community of people who shared my same desires and hopes. And I was really interested in yoga, meditation, essential oils, energy work, and stones. I had some great friends that I very much enjoyed hanging out often we would really dive deeply into these things, but they had just moved away and I knew it would be hard to create another similar relationship built around these interests.

Remember camp as a kid or teen?

I LOVED that experience! Getting to leave behind all the stress and worry of life and hang out in some beautiful location for a week (or more) and spend time on personal growth and building relationships. I wanted to go to camp! But that doesn’t really work in the middle of work and family and carpools, does it?

I knew that if I wanted to experience personal growth and delve into these things that were so intriguing to me, then I had to figure out a way to do it right in the middle of life on a random Tuesday afternoon, or after an argument with my kids, or a disappointment at work, or whatever.

And then it dawned on me! I wasn’t alone – and neither are you!

I couldn’t be the only person on the planet who wanted to experience deep personal growth but still had a life to live. Right? And if I hadn’t been able to find that community in person, or online, it was HIGHLY likely that there were other people who wanted the same thing and also hadn’t been able to find it. Right?

So it seemed absolutely clear.

I needed to create it!

So I started writing and researching and learning about the things that intrigued me. And then I started posting these things through my blog and on a FaceBook page. I wasn’t alone after all! You were there, too!

And now, here we are!

5 ways to enjoy the momentA little over two years have passed since I knew it was time to follow this deep gnawing inside. And about a year and a half since I wrote the very first blog. Since then, I have taken courses in YogaTherapy 2 (all about subtle body energies), Meditation, Essential Oils, and Yoga for PTSD. I have researched and made friends with people who know lots about stones and had many energy work sessions that have truly blown my mind. And every time I learn something new, I share it with you guys either via blog or FaceBook post.

It’s my hope that you find a community here that supports you on your own journey and connects you with resources that provide light and practical help on a Thursday afternoon. I’m so excited you are here and hope that we can share this journey for years to come. We are definitely not alone!

Are you feeling alone right now? Need a boost today? Looking for something to brighten up this moment? Here are 5 of my favorite ways to bring myself back to the moment and live in joy. Feel free to download and print it out!

Graduations happen all over the country this time of year. But usually they just pass on by and I don’t think too much about it.

Until this year.

You see, my firstborn is graduating High School this year and so I’ve been thinking about it A LOT.

As we all know, the ceremony is typically called “Commencement” and when I was graduating, it didn’t make much sense to me to call it “Beginning” when it was CLEARLY and “Ending.”

I am older and (hopefully) wiser these days and now I LOVE that it’s called “Commencement.” Every ending is the beginning of something else and so to name the event “Beginning” truly is a wonderful way to go!

So often in life we are completely focused on what we’re losing, or who we will miss that we cannot see all the possibility in front of us. Just think back to a transition that you were super sad about. Remember the tears? The sorrow? The nervous-ness? Apprehension?

Think about what happened next. What new life experiences did you have? What new friends did you make?

So that sorrowful ending became an exciting new beginning didn’t it? Even if the new thing wasn’t perfect, or had it’s share of bumps along the way – would you agree that something fantastic happened that you are so grateful for? Perhaps it was the new place or job. Maybe it was the new friend you gained that you cannot imagine life without now. Or perhaps a lesson learned that may have been painful but has served you well ever since.

Sometimes our Commencements are a natural flow of life and we know they are coming – like Graduation or a job promotion. Other times they come at us like a freight train and out of nowhere – like a job loss, or the death of a loved one or a unexpected illness.

And other times?

choose a new beginningWe choose our Commencement! Sometimes it’s as simple as New Year’s Resolutions, or the decision to join the gym or make friends with people who are a positive influence. The point is, we can CHOOSE a new beginning any time! This is fantastic news!

Does all this “New Beginning” talk make you want to choose a new beginning RIGHT NOW???

Let’s do it! Together!

What is one thing you’d like to begin – TODAY? And what are three steps you can take as you begin this new thing? I’d LOVE to hear from you what your Commencement is and how you plan to get started. Email me and let me know!

The secrets to the universe – revealed!

A couple of years ago I took my first Ayurveda training and felt like it revealed the secrets to the universe! Now I realize that this is quite a statement, but all the same, I think it’s true.

Perhaps I should start at the beginning…

Ayurveda is the sister science to Yoga and brings balance to our bodies using diet, herbs and yoga. After having completed my Yoga Teacher Training through YogaFit Training Systems, I wanted to start exploring the “squishy” parts of yoga. I didn’t even really know what that meant, exactly. I just knew how much I loved what I had learned and experienced with yoga and thought if there was more to learn, then I wanted to learn it! So, the first training that caught my eye was Ayurveda I.

Well about an hour into the training, I was so blown away by the intro, that I wanted to stop right there and just let it soak in! I felt like the overview about the three aspects of each of our own constitutions had unlocked the secrets of life. Having someone explain how my body constitution also gave insight into my behavioral aspects and tendencies, and those of my family was life-changing! I finally understood why I act the way I do sometimes, and why my husband and kids act the way they do sometimes and how that ties so directly into our body-types and our diet. Lifelong secrets revealed!

But wait! There’s more!

The information just kept coming and I learned so many things about how my daily care routine can set my day up for success (sign up to hear my upcoming interview with Renee Li on the OM Wisdom Summit on this very topic here). I learned about how it’s not just a clean diet that best serves our bodies, but how even among whole foods, there are some that are better than others at balancing each of our constitutions.

And I learned even more about breath.

Have you ever thought about how breathing is 50% work and 50% relaxation?

I know that’s a big obvious, but really, THINK about that!

I believe that so many of life’s lessons can be learned from the breath. We can discover how we respond to stress, we can relieve stress. We can breathe shallow or deep. We can hold our breath or hyper-ventilate. We can breathe on purpose or let it happen passively.

But when I REALLY thought about how breath is 50/50 on the work and relaxation, I was so inspired I wrote a poem. It’s called Ode to the Breath.

Ode to the Breath

Breathe in, breathe out
All in equal time.
Take it, take it off the mat,
And watch it make life rhyme.

Yes, I KNOW. It’s SUPER cheesy. But I gotta tell ya, this breath revelation was revolutionary for me! Here’s what was so magical about it for me – I realized that if our most basic building block of life, the breath, needed as much rest as it needed work, then why did I think I was any different?

Why did I think I could work more than half the day and only rest a little? How was that ever gonna work out? Well I have a little secret –

It wasn’t.

Gonna work out.

And so, that’s where I started. With the breath.

From there it just kept branching out. I started to look at my morning routine and what was working and what wasn’t. I started to incorporate things that created an environment for beautiful starts to my day. And then I started looking at my evening routine. What I found there was that the simplest things (foot massage, evening meditation, cup of tea) helped me transition from a busy day into a relaxed state for sleep. It turns out that the “secrets” aren’t so secretive after all!

Do I knock it out the park and do these things every single day without failing. No way. But I do them more often than I don’t. AND, when I’m feeling out of sorts, the first thing I do is check my routines. If I’ve fallen off the wagon of practices that I KNOW work for me, then that’s where I start to put it all back together. Tools in the toolbox are the ticket to climbing out of overwhelm for me. Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 10.56.36 AM

If you’re intrigued by all this and would like to learn some more of the secrets that have revolutionized my life, watch my interview with Renee from the OM Wisdom Summit where I unpack a great morning routine and discuss several other tools to find your calm in the middle of a random Tuesday. Enjoy!

Spring cleaning – break the cravings!

Spring into Balance

Spring is here! At least in Phoenix, AZ. And we all know what that means –

Time to clean out the garage and storage areas before it gets to be 110 degrees outside!

I got a little jump start on the garage this year. I was feeling kind of restless one extra balmy Saturday a few weekends ago and decided that I couldn’t stand looking at the mess for one more minute. So I rearranged and cleaned to my heart’s content. It looks AWESOME now! Everything in its place.

My next order of business in the Spring Cleaning department has nothing to do with the garage or even the house though. Know what it is? My gut. Yep. Time to do a little digestive reset. The heaviness of holiday foods and comfort foods of winter are on their way out and I can tell my digestion would really appreciate a little Spring Cleaning of its own.

How about you?

Purium - Spring Cleaning for your gut!Would your body say THANK YOU if you took a few days to clean out the cheese dip from the Super Bowl and gave it the boost of greens and water that it needs?

If so, let’s do it together!

I’m starting a cleanse next week and would love to do it together so we can give each other lots of awesome support! How about you?

If you’re thinking YES then email me right now!

If you’re thinking, I dunno…..maybe….then email me RIGHT NOW!

We can break those sugar cravings in just a few days and get rid of lingering holiday pounds all at the same time!

What’s even cooler is that I can get you a $50 discount on your first order! Woo hoo! It doesn’t get better than that!

Transformation can have a lot of different faces and transforming how our body processes and craves food is a big one for setting the stage for us to be and feel our best!

Who’s in?

I’m really fond of you, but…

Oh goodness. Has anyone ever said something like this to you? They give you a compliment and then…the dreaded transition word comes – “I’m really fond of you, BUT…”

Let me start at the beginning –

I teach a few voice and piano lessons. My bachelor’s degree is in Music Education and I did spend a few years teaching in public schools. These days I like to focus those skills by teaching private lessons. I have a few elementary aged kids and also a few adults who are picking it up after wanting to learn for many years. Admittedly, most of the kids are taking because their PARENTS want them too. And as such, they meet me for lessons with some measure of disdain. That doesn’t bother me though. I make it as fun as I can while teaching them skills that I know help them in other areas of life.

This story is about one student in particular, Lexi. I have been teaching her for a couple years now and she’s pretty talented. This child can remember everything we’ve covered, she memorizes songs effortlessly, and has a fearlessness that will serve her well in life.

Over these past two years, Lexi hasn’t hidden the fact that despite her talents, piano just isn’t her most favorite activity, but she’s never come right out and told me so.

Until the other day…

We were sitting there having our lesson, and Lexi was a little distracted. I could see she wasn’t totally into it. Finally, she turns to me, sweetly puts her hand on my shoulder and says,

“I’m really fond of you, but I just don’t care for piano.”

Then she proceeded to give me a hug, just to illustrate that there are no hard feelings.

Oh, from the mouths of babes! If only we could all learn this lesson.

We don’t all have to love the same things or share the same interests or even agree on the deeper issues of life. We can STILL recognize each others’ iridescent amazingness and treat each other with love and honor. Wouldn’t that be fantastic?

If we take a moment to pause, I would imagine we could all think of someone that we have a hard time dealing with because of some difference we have with them. But what if we were able to put that aside and see how shiny and sparkly they are anyway? I tell ya, I think it could prove to be a powerful exercise.

So, even though it surprised me a bit at first, thanks Lexi for your words of wisdom! I am deeply grateful. And I’m really fond of you too. : )

How’s 2016 going so far?

Hey there Dragonflies! It’s great to be back in action! In case you are just joining us, I took a few weeks off over the holidays and into the new year to rest, rejuvenate, see family and do some planning for 2016. It as been a wonderful few weeks! If you have the freedom to take some time away from work (even work that you LOVE, like me), I HIGHLY suggest you do so! The way your mind, body and soul relax over a longer vacation is far different than just a week here and there.

We are almost a full month into this new year, and I am wondering – how’s it going so far? Are you still on track to realize goals that you set just four weeks ago? Or maybe a better question – are you still thinking that you’d like to set some goals for 2016, but wondering if it’s too late? Well, IT’S NOT! No way! We can set goals at any time and gather the resources to get them done whether it’s January or December.

One of the things that speaks to me deeply is having things that I do on a daily basis that keep me grounded and feeling well-cared-for. Here’s my list:

  1. meditate daily
  2. yoga sun salutations
  3. tidy one room
  4. set my tasks for the day
  5. read 30 minutes
  6. eat ayurvedically
  7. be thankful
  8. “phone off” time
  9. foot massage

Do I complete every single one every day – nope. BUT, I do complete most of them AND way more of them than I did before I made my list and placed it in my planner so I could see it everyday!

I made a template for YOU! So you can create your own daily routine list!

This is THE topic chosen by popular vote from a survey I sent out. Transformation never goes out of style, and seems to be of particular interest right now.

So, if you want to move forward with space in your head and heart for thankfulness, you GOTTA come hang out with me! (Plus, I’ve always wanted to meet you!)

Here’s what we’ll cover:

How will you respond to the restless winds of transformation?

Do you feel it? That restlessness that comes with the transformation of the seasons. Perhaps your schedule changes a bit, or daylight saving time throws your off for a few days. You may become nostalgic or feel fancy-free. At the very least, your wardrobe is probably turning to some warmer options. Who else loves sweater weather???

Change is in the air and I don’t know about you, but I can feel it in every aspect of my life.

One thing I have noticed for myself is that autumn is the time when I am most likely to engage inner transformation. Just like the way the leaves begin to show their true colors, I sense mine emerging with cooling temps. I usually enroll in a course, or adopt a new practice, or journal more frequently.

Do you have special transformation activities that you save for the fall?

What is it that you embrace during this time when the earth embraces such deep transformation? Do you clean the garage? Look up new recipes to try? Get all crafty? Find a hiking group? Make s’mores by the fire?

Whatever you choose – Does it soothe your soul? Does it rearrange your inner closets? Does it change you?

Would you like to purposefully embrace something this year that has the potential to transform you on the deepest level? You know, that level where we talk to ourselves.

You DO talk to yourself.

We all do.

But what exactly do you say to yourself?

If you would like to transform that inner dialogue from hateful to helpful or from depressing to inspiring, you are so in luck right now!

I have been consolidating all I have learned over the past couple of decades about transforming inner dialogue into a 5-week course that will guide you through the process of changing your inner voices from down-right mean, into the encouraging, loving voices we all wish to hear.

Are you interested in this course? Let me know!
